Now, we want to turn our gaze back to magical thinking, while integrating myth with the most rational language of all: the legal.
We understand legality as a belief system configured through the reaffirmation of the state apparatus—a language that gains symbolic capital through its distance from the social body, reinforcing its superiority and elitism. These languages—mythical and legal—are not opposites, but complementary, giving one another meaning.
To ensure the consistent and lasting non-intervention of this place, we propose a legal contract establishing an NGO as the sole owner of the enchanted space. Through this, we request that Abadía Retuerta, as a business initiative of Novartis, to transfer the ownership of the land and ensure its non-intervention, with all the implications that such a gesture entails. In this way, the space will become a legally recognized entity, with full rights and authority. The contract will carry legal validity and be overseen by specialized lawyers.
The legal text will therefore interfere with the reforestation project planned for the entire area. To make this intervention concrete, the project proposes the demarcation of a 15 m² square within the area designated for reforestation. The shape of the boundary integrates traditional margin-building techniques with a non-interventionist approach. Using a trench system and locally sourced materials—stones and clay—a buried contour will be created, delimiting the area and preventing vegetation from growing around the square. Through this separation, the interior will remain completely untouched.
Various systems will be implemented to inform passersby of the importance of non-intervention in this site: instructions for the guests, talks with Abadía Retuerta’s workers, school workshops in the area… Signage in the space and accessible online information will support this, alongside the archival materials we have gathered to support our theory. We had collected maps, pictures and other materials that tell our story.
